STIR/SHAKEN: what it means in pay per call

STIR/SHAKEN: The caller ID authentication framework that the FCC requires voice providers to use, so carriers can verify the number shown is really the caller's.

How it works in pay per call

Under STIR/SHAKEN, the originating carrier signs each call's caller ID with an attestation level, and the terminating carrier verifies it. Calls with weak or missing attestation are more likely to be labeled or blocked.

Voice providers must also file in the FCC's Robocall Mitigation Database. If you dial out, use a carrier that gives your numbers full attestation, and pair it with caller ID reputation monitoring.

Example

Example: a call signed with full ('A') attestation tells the receiving carrier that the originating carrier knows the customer and that the customer is authorized to use the number shown.
